Hudson River Potters is delighted to offer a weekend workshop with renowned master potter David MacDonald!

Potluck dinner and demo open to all HRP members.
Saturday May 20th 10 AM - 5 PM and Sunday May 21st 10 AM to 3 PM at a private studio
David will be demonstrating throwing, tooling, finishing, and making handles on Saturday and decorating techniques on Sunday.
Both locations are in Ossining, NY. All sessions are in person.
David MacDonald received his BS in Art Education from Hampton University and his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 1971 he joined the faculty of the School of Art at Syracuse University, retiring in 2008. His work has been featured in several ceramic textbooks and magazines. He has also been featured in several nationally televised programs including HGTV’s “Modern Masters” and PBS’s “A Craftsmen’s Legacy”. He has been honored with awards from national arts organizations such as National Conference for the Education in the Ceramics Arts’ “Excellence in Teaching Award” and the National Crafts Council’s “Master Craftsman Award”. He is featured in the recent book “Contemporary Black American Ceramic Artists”. Since his retirement he has been active lecturing across the country and working in his studio creating his signature ceramic works.

Many of the rules that govern regular clay do no apply to paper clay. Jerry Bennett, a leading international paper clay artist will conduct a hands-on workshop which will provide an opportunity for students to explore and experience new approaches to functional pottery and sculptural forms using paper clay. Join visiting artist, Jerry Bennett, as he guides you through how to make paper clay and bonding slips for hand-built forms. In this two-day workshop, expand your understanding of this unique material by adding various fibers to the clay to make both functional pottery and sculptural forms. Gain valuable insight as Jerry shares practical, problem-solving advice related to your studio work (i.e how to fix broken work, reduce shrinkage in clay, and prevent cracks).
All Experience Levels are Welcome
We will be working with cone 6 porcelain so please bring to the workshop hand building tools plus a small pair of scissors and a clean canvas to work on. Participants in the hands-on workshop will receive clay materials and handouts that will provide valuable information about paper clay, glaze formulas, and supplier information.
About Jerry Bennett
Jerry Bennett is currently an active studio artist in the Philadelphia area and runs the Two Rivers Studio. He has been an Adjust Faculty at Holy Family University in Philadelphia for many years. He received his M.F.A. from Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana in 1975 and has given workshops and lectures at over fifty colleges, schools and art centers through the United States and recently was the leader of the Second International Paper Symposium in Kecskemet, Hungary. “The first time I set my hands on clay I was a senior in high school, I knew immediately I wanted to make a career of it.” sums up esteemed potter Lucy Fagella’s passion and dedication to her craft. A member of the Asparagus Valley Pottery Guild and founding coordinator of the Asparagus Valley Pottery Trail, her work has been praised in national juried and invitational exhibitions, and featured in such publications as Ceramics Monthly, Country Living, Yankee Magazine, Edible Pioneer Valley and Studio Potter to name a few.
We are honored to have Lucy Fagella host our upcoming workshop. Lucy will be sharing her approach to various functional wheel-thrown forms. Inspired by our natural world, her work and personal approach will inspire us all to reconnect with nature and renew our appreciation for handmade work.

Please join us for an exciting Fall 2018 Hudson River Potters Workshop presented by Master potter and hand builder, Sheilagh Flynn. She will be demonstrating throwing and altering techniques for us. She is also well known for her texturing skills and her signature glazes. If there is anything that you would like demonstrated, or discussed during this workshop , please let Gerrie Wiles (gerwiles@aol.com) know and she will pass it onto Sheilagh.
The workshop will take place in Minu’s studio in Ossining on Saturday, October 27th from 10am - 4pm and resume on Sunday, October 28th from 10am - 3pm. HRP will provide coffee, tea and a light breakfast on both days, as well as snacks throughout each day. A potluck dinner will follow the Saturday workshop where you can continue the conversation with your fellow potters and Sheilagh. Another topic of particular interest she will discuss is participation in high-end craft shows.
The cost per person is $150 for both days. For those of you who have not taken an HRP workshop, please consider it. The knowledge and skills gained from the workshop are well worth the price. Please let Gerrie Wiles know if you are interested in this workshop. You need to have your money sent in by October 14th, as there are a limited number of spaces.
